Chapter 6

*It had been a long day for both Logan and Bilbo after their escape from the Gollum creature. Eventually, they managed to find Gandalf, the Dwarves, and Logan's crew, who camped out somewhere in the midst of a forest. There was no doubt they were quite concerned when they got lost, though they couldn't tell with Thorin because he rarely showed much emotions. Undoubtedly, they were curious about what those two were up to. So they told their story to their friends, much to their awe and amazement*

Bilbo: You see, Gollum thought we knew the way out and was trying to head us off.

Justin: And yet you were able to escape?

Logan: We merely followed him to the exit.

Thorin: We had to fight our way through the goblin guard.

Popeye: And let me tells ya, it weren't easy brrezy eitha.

Thorin: How is it they didn't see you?

Bilbo: Oh well… The art of burling is really, you know… The art of being unobtrusive.

Popeye: *scratches his head* Wha?

Logan: To put it bluntly… Invisible.

Gandalf: Your story boys has the ring of truth. Yes, it rings true.

Logan: Gandalf?

Gandalf: You need say no more. We'd best get a move on. There are still goblins about.

Popeye: We're goin' back to the mountains?

Gandalf: No. Don't you see? The sun is setting in the west, behind the mountains. We're on the other side, to the edge of the land beyond.

Justin: Then we have no time to lose. We best get going right away.

Logan: Right. We'll join you in a moment, Gandalf. I wanna talk to my friends and Mr. Baggins in private.

Gandalf: Take all the time you need, but not too much. We have a long night ahead of us. *walks off with the Dwarves*

Logan: So, you wanna know how we escaped?

Justin: Well, it's not like we don't believe you Logan, but a savage creature would've ripped you to shreds and not to mention there would've been a whole army of Goblins looking for you. And yet you just "happened" to sneak out with no one seeing you, it's sounds too crazy to be true.

Logan: Well, when I said invisible, it wasn't just a figure of speech. I used a spell that Yen Sid taught me to turn invisible. As for Bilbo… *looks to Bilbo* Show them.

Bilbo: I suppose it's all right. *takes the ring out his pocket, slips it on his finger, and disappears* What do you think?

Justin: Amazing! Where did you find it?

Logan: In some cave under the mountain, apparently it belonged to Gollum… Kind of feel bad for the guy when I think about it.

Justin: Hmm… Um, Bilbo? Suppose…I could try it?

Bilbo: I suppose it's all right. *takes off the ring and hands it to Justin*

Logan: This I gotta see.

Justin: *examines the ring* Hmm… It's rather interesting design. I wonder who made this thing… *slips the ring on his finger and disappears* Whoa… This is incredible!

Popeye: Justin, where are yas?

Justin: I'm right in front of you, Popeye. I can see you just fine, though it's a little blurry.

Logan: Blurry? *looks to Bilbo* Was it like that for you, Bilbo?

Bilbo: Well… A little.

Logan: Must be a side effect of the magic.

Justin: Well, I suppose one can get used to… Wait… What's that?

*Unbeknownst to the others, Justin could see something from right behind them. A giant eye of sorts looming right over them. It seemed to be made of fire and it didn't do much except stare down at Justin, as if it was looking directly into his soul. Justin never felt so scared seeing it, but he was more afraid when it somehow…spoke to him*

Eye: You cannot hide… I see you… There is no life…in the void… Only death…

Justin: WAAAHHH!!! *flicks the ring off his finger, reappears and falls backwards onto the ground, breathing rapidly*

Logan: Justin! Justin, what's wrong?

Justin: I… I, ah…

Popeye: Speaks to me, buddy! Wha happinged?

Logan: *picks up the ring* I'm going to find out.

Justin: Logan, NO!

*But it's too late. Logan slips on the ring and disappears before Justin could stop him. Logan finds himself in Justin's place, an invisible state where everything seemed blurry before his eyes. It was much different than when Logan could turn himself invisible. As Logan looks around, he sees a glow over him and slowly turns to see the eye itself staring straight at Logan*

Eye: I see you… KEY BEARER!!!

Logan: AAAHHH!!! *takes the ring off his finger, reappears and throws it to the ground*

Bilbo: Logan! Are you all right?

Logan: I…I-I'm fine. I gues we're just…not used to such magic is all.

Popeye: But Logan--

Logan: *covers Popeye's mouth* Shh! *whispering* Some things are better left unsaid.

Bilbo: *picks up the ring* I think it'd be best if I held onto this. Don't want you to go through all that again.

Logan: *nods* Good idea. C'mon, Gandalf is probably waiting for us.

*Later that night, as the group continued their journey, Justin noticed a light coming from inside Logan's scabbard*

Justin: Hey Logan, what's up with your sword? It's…glowing

Logan: Huh? *sees the light and pulls out his sword to see that it was glowing again* Again?

Popeye: Oh yeah, I remember now. Didn't it glow back in the caves?

Logan: Yeah, just before the Goblins-- *eyes widen* Oh no!

*Suddenly, atop the mountain, a group of Goblins stares down at the passing company from on the road. But these were no ordinary Goblins, which only made it much worse for Logan, his crew, and the entire company. Considering that these Goblins were riding on the biggest wolves that Logan and his friends have ever seen*

Thorin: The Wargs!

Gandalf: With the Goblins!

Logan: Run for it!

Goblins: *singing* Fifteen birds in five fir trees,
their feathers were fanned in a fiery breeze!
But, funny little birds, they had no wings!
O what shall we do with the funny little things?
O what shall we do with the funny little things?

*They made haste away from the charging Goblins, running as fast as their legs could carry them. Soon, they passed by a row of trees and the Dwarves proceeded to climb as far to the top as possible far from the Goblins reach. Bilbo had a difficult time climbing the tree, having never climbed one before. But luckily, Logan was able to help his friend and they climbed as the Goblins stood there waiting for them to come down*

Goblins: *singing* Roast 'em alive, or stew them in a pot;
fry them, boil them, eat them hot?
Bake and toast 'em, fry and roast 'em!
till beards blaze, and eyes glaze;
till hair smells and skins crack
fat melts, and bones black
in cinders lie
beneath the sky!
So the dwarves shall die!

*At one point, Gandalf was able to frighten away the Goblins with a plant of sorts hanging from a tree branch that exploded in a flash of light. For added assistance, Logan blasted a shot of fire toward the Goblins and frightened them away. But their relief was short lived as they returned angrier than ever. Determined to catch our heroes dead or alive, they threw their torches toward the trees as the fire caught the tree and proceeded to rise toward their position*

Goblins: *singing* Fifteen birds in five fir trees,
their feathers were fanned in a fiery breeze!
But, funny little birds, they had no wings!
O what shall we do with the funny little things?
O what shall we do with the funny little things?

Dori: Help!

Bombur: We can't go any higher!

Justin: We're trapped!

*Gandalf, determined to save his friends, rose to the top of the tree and raised his arms high in the sky. Logan and his crew turned to the sky and were amazed to see some remarkable creatures approach them. They were the biggest birds that they had ever seen, more appropriately Giant Eagles. But that's not all there was for leading these pack of birds, the legendary Lionheart, a lion with a pair of eagle wings, flew toward them and with a signal led them toward the trees to pick up the dwarves and the others. Together, they clutched the heroes by their arms and were dragged away from the trees which proceeded to go down in a fiery blaze as the frustrated Goblins watched them fly away from their sight*

Justin: A cat… a giant flying cat! *chuckles* As I live and breath!

Logan: Lionheart… You're Lionheart, aren't you?

*Lionheart doesn't say much of a word. Instead, he simply turns toward Logan and simply gives a nod in response at least to answer Logan's question*

Popeye: Not much of a talka, is he?

Justin: You know him, Logan?

Logan: Well, not personally. But Rae once told me about Lionheart while we were traveling in space. I'd always hear these stories about Lionheart, how great he was, how he was essential to the team, and how he used to save them countless times. She used to tell me everything about him… That is…before I sent her and Palladon away.

Justin: Hmm... *smiles* I'd like to meet these friends of yours sometime.

Logan: Yeah… They're the greatest friends you'll ever get to meet. Maybe some day, when this is over, you and Popeye will get to meet them… Someday.

*As they flew through the night, they didn't know where Lionheart & the Eagles will take them but they had to hope it was as far from the Goblins as possible. Bilbo, frightened of heights, had to hang on to Dori by his legs. Clearly, he absolutely did not enjoy flying at all*

Logan: *calling out* Bilbo, Dori! How're you two holding up?

Bilbo: Oh! My arms.

Dori: My poor legs! My legs!

Bilbo: But what will they do with us? Drop us to our deaths?

Dori: Who knows? But they've brought us a far distance with no dropping! Behold, the River of Wilderland below! By thunder! They're taking us to the edge of Mirkwood Forest…

Bilbo: To dash us against those rocks, I know it!

Logan: Oh calm down, will ya, Bilbo? Just relax and enjoy the ride!

*But as they neared the forest, dashing against the rocks was probably the last thing either Lionheart or the Eagles had planned. As soon as they got close to the ground, they steadily dropped the dwarves, Bilbo, and the others safely onto the soft patch of grass. They were all relieved to touch solid ground again and that the birds were not to do them harm. Gandalf turns to the leader of the birds and offers a praise*

Gandalf: O Great Lord of the Eagles… We are eternally grateful for your gallant rescue.

Great Lord of the Eagles: I have not forgotten the arrow… That brought me down so many years ago. I have not forgotten the wizard… Who found me and healed my wound. *prepares to return to the sky* And now… Farewell, wherever you fare… Till your aeries receive you at the journey's end.

*And just like that, The Great Lord of the Eagles, along with Lionheart, take off into the night sky leading the rest of the Eagles to flock forward wherever they intended to go in the first place. Logan and his band wave goodbye to their allies, grateful that they saved their lives and watch their figures fly off shortly before they fully disappeared into the endless sky*

Logan: Goodbye, Lionheart! Hope to see you again!

Popeye: Heh… Comes and goes wheneva he feels likes, don't he?

*Sure enough, they take a look around where Lionheart and the Eagles dropped them off, as daylight shined over the forest. It seemed beautiful at first, but then, after everything they had experienced, things were never as they seemed to be*

Bilbo: So this is the Forest of Mirkwood.

Thorin: Terrible place, if I remember. And dangerous.

Logan: *sarcastically* Oh that's REALLY encouraging, Thorin.

Gandalf: Now, now. The map shows the safest path. Follow it closely, straight through the forest. Don't stray off the track. If you do, you will never get out of Mirkwood.

Thorin: You speak as if you weren't going with us.

Popeye: Oh that's silly. Course he's comin'. *turns to Logan* He is comin', ain't he, Logans?

Logan: *turns to Gandalf* Aren't you?

Gandalf: I'm not. I have pressing business away south.

Bombur: Oh no! He can't mean it.

Dori: What will we do without Gandalf?

Balin: Please, don't leave us.

Gandalf: Now, now. I'm already late because of bothering with you people.

Justin: But I thought a wizard's never late.

Gandalf: Exactly. That's why I'm sending Mr. Baggins and your crew with the Dwarves. That should be enough.

Balin: Mr. Baggins?

Dori: Bilbo?

Bombur: The Burglar?

Logan, Popeye and Justin: Us?

Bilbo: Me? I'm no equal to a wizard.

Logan: And I still have so much to learn about my abilities. Besides, you know this place better than we do.

Gandalf: Nonsense. You are the lucky numbers. And you'll soon find out there's more about you than you guess.

*They ponder about this thought at first, knowing that Gandalf was already asking so much from them. But then, if Gandalf truly had faith in not only the abilities of Bilbo, but Logan and his crew as well, then they truly were brought to this place for a higher purpose. Their concerns turn to a smile and they nod understanding what Gandalf wants from them*

Logan: *bows* We shall not fail you, Gandalf.

Gandalf: You lot, will be my surrogates. My replacements, so to say. *hands some material to Bilbo* Here is paper and a marker. Keep a strict log of your journey... So I may study it when we meet again and point out your missteps.

Bilbo: We can only do our best.

Gandalf: Then that will have to suffice.

*And so, the Dwarves, Bilbo, Logan, and his crew watch as Gandalf walks away from their position. No one knows for sure where he was going or what sort of business he had to deal with. They can only trust that Gandalf knew what he was doing though whether they would in fact meet again remained uncertain. Still, there are a guarantee to be many great obstacles and challenges on the path they will set forth to. All they knew for sure... This would be a journey that they hoped to come out of safely*

At least Bilbo didn't catch a glimpse of Sauron in the Rankin/Bass version.
