Benny, Leo, Johnny, and Rae Meet King Kong Ch. 10

Chapter 10

*At the hour of dawn, the fighter pilots were getting ready to board their planes. One of the pilots at the end was about to get in, when a swat to the neck knocks him out cold. Heath stands over the body, with none of the others paying attention. Snickering, Heath quickly takes the pilot's gear as his own and attaches the camera to the top of the plane as he prepares to board*

Heath: *takes a deep breath* My mother always said I should look on the up-side of life. Soon, I'll have the last piece of footage of Kong's full impact in this period. *snaps his finger* But wait! Why settle with that? Why, a notable film director once took part in a scene where he actually slays the beast. *smiles deviously* So why pass up? *starts the engine* Call me a hypocrite, but no one shall have the beast but me.

*Soon, Heath joins up with the other fighter pilots into the air in a V-line formation as they make their way to the Empire State Building. By now, the beast had since been climbing to the top with the girls held firmly in his grip. A crowd of people gather below to watch the ascent, as Driscoll, Denham, and the team arrive to see the planes*

Denham: Here comes the planes.

Policeman: They'll get him.

Driscoll: *worried* Can they shoot him and not hit the girls? *he starts inside*

Policeman: Don't get on the roof!

Leo: Wait, Jack, give the pilots a chance!

Benny: No! Come on, let's follow him! Maybe there's still a chance for us to save Kong and the girls!

*As they all enter the building, the planes were nearing the Empire State Building just as Kong managed to get to the roof with very little else to go. Heath chuckles and gets his gun ready for fire*

Heath: All right, Heath. The moment that make you a star or break you. *cocks the gun* Nothing personal, Kong, just business.

*Kong turns and looks up at the planes, responding with a mighty roar. Ann and Rae, desperately clinging to Kong, sees the planes coming. As they make one round turn around the building, discussing amongst themselves of their plan, Kong gently puts Ann down and takes Rae off his shoulder, hoping to keep them out of harms way*

Rae: *realizing the plan* No, Kong, don't! I know you're just trying to protect Ann. But you put us down and those planes will kill you!

*But Kong does not listen, as if knowing his fate is already determined. He climbs on the very top and beats his chest as if challenging the planes to do their worst. Heath sees this and prepares to lead the assault*

Heath: *snickers* And here… We… Go!

*Heath turns the control, as his plane dives at Kong with the other planes following. One by one, the planes starts to fire their turrets towards Kong, the ape swinging his arms trying without success to knock down the passing planes. Heath lets out a mighty laugh, as he fires an entourage of bullets towards his target, even as they miss. Ann and Rae hunch down to avoid the gunfire, as Kong struggles to hold his place. Feeling confident, Heath zooms the plane firing the twin guns to the beast*

Heath: Ha ha!! I got you now, you overgrown chimp! Eat this!! *fires bullets at Kong*

*But suddenly, Kong manages to grab the wing of the fighter plane and hurls it down*

Heath: *tumbling out of control* OH CRUUUUUUD!!!!

*The plane goes tumbling down toward the ground, crashing against the side of the building as it descends. Seeing no choice, Heath quickly preps himself and opens his parachute to propel himself out of the burning plane. He slowly floats down toward the ground, relieved to have made it safely*

Heath: Well, back to the drawing board…

*Meanwhile, the rest of the planes continue their assault on Kong, who suddenly starts to feel the bullets stab along his chest and holds himself in pain. Kong scratches his chest and is surprised to see the blood on his fingers, realizing that he was dealing with a dangerous challenge. Rae sees that Kong is in trouble and desperately stands up trying to wave them off*

Rae: *waves her arms* NO!!! Please, stop shooting! Stop! Leave him alone!!

*But the fighter pilots were so busy shooting and kept their attention on Kong, they were unable to get the signal. Even as Kong suddenly feels his strength lowering and losing conscious due to the loss of blood, Kong still hold his ground. Even as Ann looked terrified of the situation, a different expression was on Rae: Pity. She can only watch as the planes continue to fire, now Kong is barely able to hold onto the pole with one hand. Knowing this may be the end, he lifts up Ann and looks at her one last time. Rae quickly pulls out her wand and attempts her healing spell*

Rae: *waves her wand* Moon healing…

*But midway through, Kong's finger taps the wand, lowering it down. Rae looks into Kong's eyes with confusion. And somehow the gleam in Kong's eyes says it all, Rae understanding that the beast doesn't want to be saved. Rae simply shakes her head solemnly, in contrast to Ann, who's face only shows fear to the beast. Ready for one final stand, Kong lowers Ann back down to safety and looks down onto both her and Rae with sorrowful eyes*

*RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!!!! The plane successfully makes some solid hits against Kong, who clutches his neck in pain, and he suddenly realizes that this is it. As the fighters finish off Kong, he feebly holds onto the pole, looking towards the city and the sky for one last time. And then, to Rae's horror, she looks to see Kong's hand slip from the pole and he falls, crashing along the sides of the building, to his inevitable death*

Rae: NOOOOOO!!!!

*Crying, Rae lies along the ledge with Ann. By now, Driscoll, Denham, the Fantasy Adventure Team, and a couple of cops rush to their rescue. Driscoll leaps across the ladder, to Ann, incoherent with terror for her. As he kisses her wildly, Rae is retrieved by her friends, who share the same despair that Rae feels*

Driscoll: Ann! Ann! Hang on, dear!

Benny: Rae!

Teresa: Rae, darling, are you all right?

Rae: *shedding tears* Kong… He…

Leo: We know, Rae… We know.

Rae: I could’ve saved him… But… He wouldn’t let me.

Benny: *lays a paw on her shoulder* You did your best; but not all beasts are saved in the end.

*Rae and Benny embrace, as the rest of the team looks down toward the streets, their heads held down as they mourn a heavy loss. Though Kong was indeed a destructive beast and harmed anyone that got in his way, in the end, he was truly a noble protector to someone he cared. Knowing for the first time, Kong felt… Love*

*As for Kong, his crumbled body lies dead atop the streets as a gathering of New Yorkers come together to see the beast, as police officers attempt to keep them as far back as possible. Pushing his way through the crowd was Carl Denham, who desperately wanted to see Kong one last time. Also joining him were the Fantasy Adventure Team*

Denham: Let me through, officer, my name's Denham.

Officer: Just a moment. *waves his hand* Lieutenant.

Denham: *to the approaching Lieutenant* Lieutenant, I'm Carl Denham.

Lieutenant: Carl Denham?

Woman: Denham? That's the man who captured the monster!

Leo: Um, guys… Just to let you know, uh… The time omnitrix is fully charged. We can leave whenever we want.

Kairel: *looks to everyone, then to Leo* Leo. Is it okay if we stay a little longer? Benny… He feels we should pay Kong's respect.

Leo: *looks to Kairel and nods* All right.

Benny: I remember someone once said, "When Jaws dies, nobody cry. But when Kong dies… Everybody cry."

Johnny: Who said that, Benny?

Benny: *looks up to the sky* Dino De Laurentis, a man who would retell Kong's story forty-three years later. *to the team* And you know what? *pauses as a tear falls from his eye* He was right.

Rae: Oh, Benny…

Benny: *wipes the tears from his eyes* Come on… Let’s go home.

Leo: *turns to Denham* Goodbye, Mr. Denham. *slams the watch*

*Denham doesn't say anything, even as a bright light flashes briefly. He just steps closer to the fallen Kong. He stares speechlessly until the Lieutenant himself walks over*

Lieutenant: Well, Denham. The airplanes got him.

Denham: *turns to the Lieutenant, shakes his head* Oh no. It wasn't the airplanes. *turns back to Kong* It was Beauty killed the Beast.

*The cops stare him, very puzzled, as all of New York murmurs amongst themselves. Denham takes a long look over Kong knowing at long last his story had come just as he had envisioned*
